It's always quite surprising how economically illiterate the unions are in Jordan. It seems that the so called "labour" unions seem to only concern themselves with political issues and not with the actual economic situation of labour itself.

I've been reading your blog for a while and find it to be much more informed than the other blogs on Jordanplanet. I however, must disagree with you ona number of points.

I am really happy to find a leftist thinker who has not joined in what is called "the unholy alliance" of leftists and Islamists which has plaqued middle eastern politics.

But as an economics student I must disagree with your anti free market stance.

Unions can really only be benificial in a situation whereby monopolistic competition in the labour market exists AND they are able to deduce the free market wage rate and bargain towards that wage rate. However, unions generally cause inefficiencies in the market whereby they can cause greater unemployment by bargaining for higher wage.

On a political note, the unions in Jordan engage in very little collective bargaining and rather consume themselves with political issues since they have been taken over by Islamists.

I see that you are not a fan of neo liberalism or neo classical economics. Suffice it to say that most economic theory and sholarship is based on that outlook, save for the keynesians whose outlook is not that different with regards to the free market.

Why are you so against the free market?

sorry I'm posting again because I just read your entry on the fuel price liberalization

My main objection is not that the fuel prices have been liberalized but rather that they have been liberalized so quickly , the government is right to liberalize to fuel prices but perhaps should've done it more slowly, for the followwing reasons

1)Debt, I know you've responded to this but let me showyou the other side, fuel prices are expected to continue rising over the next few years due to the increased demand of emerging markets such as China and India, there is nothing the Jordanian government can do about this, to subsidize this the government would have to increase its deficit to the point of no return and would ultimately have no cut spending in other socially progressive subsidization, oil is by far the best subsidy programme to be cut. Why?

2) As we have seen the undervalued subsidized price of oil has led to serious ramifications in the complemetary automobilke market. Jordanians have bought more cars than they should because oil has been historically cheap. Thius has caused major problems in urban centres such as Amman whereby the road system, albeit inefficient in itslef cannot handle the large number of cars,

3) furthermore, Jordan does not produce cars therefore the large influx of cars are imported and as ushc represents a deficit in the trade balance. Therefore, lower oil prices does not really help the local economy but rather causes a distortion in the market. Higher gas prices will lead towards a shift of consumption away from private cars towards people using public transportation given that the public is given enough time to adjust and public transportation such as taxis and buses are given enoguh time to augment their supply for this increase in demand, this can also be done by providing oil subsidies to taxi and bus operators whilst simultaneously increasing the price of oil. I think the government should even go further and tax oil for private consumers and subsidize oil for public transportation and businessers that require the use of heavy transportation,

4)The market is not chaos as you said, it is rather one of the most ordered creations of humanity and is invaluable to the well being of the human race.

It is anonymous again,

let me start off by saying that I greatly admire your blog because it is much needed fresh outlook on the state of affairs in Jordan. unforunately the only non-mainstream voices heard in Jordan is Islamist voice and that deeply troubles me, the leftist voice is in need of a revival and you seem to be in a great position to do so so I implore you to keep posting and looking into the state of affairs.

I am not really concerned with the political dimension as much as I am with the economic. Mostly because it appears that any plans of political reform will be taken advantage of by the Islamists.

Back to Economics, over the past 40 years or so Economics has become less of a social science than that of a pure science whereby pure mathematical and graphical models are used instead of normative arguments. This is in part due to the ingoing development of econometrics. Therefore, Economic modelling is not really about abstract arguments than it is about solid numbers leadings to cool hard facts.

There is an enormous amount of economic literature that is produced in the academic sphere (papers that are written by professors or PhDs and are most importantly peer reviewed and open to scrutiny from everyone) that show very distinct results. Abstract notions of what is good for the economy based on rhetoric is really has no place in scholarship.

I'm not a free market fundamentalist as Joseph Stiglitz (famous nobel prize winning keynesian economist) would say . But rather that the free market has the ability to adequately distrbiute resources efficiently, There does exist however market failure and it is the role of government to correct for market failure.

I wish not to talk about the abstract, I've shown an argument about oil prices, but you have not responded directly to the arguments, I wish you would do so,

Unfortunately, being a subscriber to the University of Jordan Academic journal "derasat" I am appalled to see that a very large number of economics papers lag far behind the rest of the world in terms of rigour and originality.

I really have nothing more to say other than I continue to read your blog and awaiting your next post where I will attempt to provide an economic argument that either supports or counters your assertions.

I do agree with you completely and this also the free market view that the dinar should not be pegged to the dollar but rather let it float on the world market. Therefore we can assume thatthe price of the dinar will fall substantially and our exports wil become far more competitive but the main problem with this is the fact that we don't have the means of adopting a completely free monetary policy, we lack the competency, we don't have the equivelant of greenspan to look over monetary policy, perhaps at somepoint we might but not yet, if the Economics department publications are any indication then we might have to wait

Many people argue that eating too many plants grown with commercial fertilizers or pesticides can cause
health problems. Use the cultivator to make holes in the soil
and turn it up just a little between the rows.

In some cases, the quantity of materials for making compost in the amounts desired
(an annual layer 2 inches deep across the garden) cannot be obtained.

3  Coconut oil: To have a beautiful, shiny hair and stimulate hair growth, give yourself a
scalp massage with warm coconut oil once a week. Sometimes, this
process starts from the temples and goes back, and sometimes it begins from the top of the head.
Even though all the hair was thoroughly coated and it was
always rinsed so well that no traces were left, little by little the kids escaped our weekly ritual and
I found it easier to not chase them about it, especially considering the hundreds of other matters which did need to be chased.

Low self-esteem, hair fall, itching in scalp and facial skin infections are common side effects due to dandruff problems.

From my experience, it is quite difficult to style hair immediately after
a hot oil treatment, so you might want to skip the curling iron or hot rollers.
Exactly what the oil does is clean and exfoliate your hair
follicles, help make your bloodstream circulate better all around your head and in return boosts the process involving hair growth and acts as
being a supercharger for making your hair get bigger.
